Change Your Mind

Is it Bad to Change Your Mind?

Good morning!

Tropical weather at 46 degrees North Latitude continues to be the norm — though gently raining at the moment. Mowing the lawn at 87 degrees (F) and very high humidity almost did me in… gotta be careful out there, people. Colliding hurricanes down in the Gulf of Mexico.  Who knew!? What is your favourite garden produce this bountiful time of year? Remember the old days when the United States was asked to supervise elections in other countries in order to assure the credibility of the process?

  • Saw a yard sign out on the hike:  Just Send the Meteor!
    • Funny, except it’s not, especially because there are those who really do feel that way.
  • I enjoy my role as Chairperson of the Board for a local charter school.
    • I’ve been impressed with the way in which our faculty, staff, and leaders have addressed the myriad challenges; thank you to them!
    • There is no road map for this and so having a pioneering, entrepreneurial spirit is essential.
  • “Success isn’t about what your life looks like to others, it’s what it feels like to you.” (Michelle)
  • Here’s a fascinating statistic:  Since the COVIDs started, virtual visits to a physician have resulted in seventy-percent (70%) fewer new prescriptions written and filled.  (Source: Pharma Rx Industry)
  • Why do most people, businesses, and organizations NOT have a formal shared vision?
    • Simple answer:  It’s difficult — and it takes focus, patience, trust in the process, and time.
    • I’m currently working with a client and the vision has already gone through more than thirty drafts… it takes time to get it right and to get 100% buy-in.
    • When you have the day-to-day distractions buzzing around your head it’s enormously difficult to pause sufficiently, consider the big picture, trust a process, and be patient.
    • Which is why it almost always helps to have an experienced consultant at your side.
  • Change your mind?  Update your thinking?
    • It is a curious thing how often it is considered a negative to have changed your mind about something.
    • Shouldn’t changing your mind — or adjusting an approach — because you’ve learned more about something be applauded — and emulated?
    • No one can know everything, especially not in today’s world, and we need to change the culture around changing one’s mind.
      • Most of us settle on an opinion or a position we think is right and then we spend the rest of our lives searching for evidence to support it.
  • “People may doubt what you say, but they will believe what you do.”  (Cass)
  • “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.”  (Wells-Barnett)
  • “You can’t build a long-term future on short-term thinking.”  (Cox
  • choose to CHANGE my mindset and behaviour if:
  1. I see my leaders, colleagues, and staff behaving differently;
  2. I know what is expected of me — I agree with it, and it is meaningful;
  3. I have the skills and the opportunities to behave in the new way;
  4. Barriers are being removed and I’m being rewarded for making the changes I’m being asked to make.  (McKinsey Influence Model)
  • What are you reading?  I haven’t asked that in awhile and haven’t meant to subordinate its importance; sorry.
    • For me:  Krueger’s This Tender Land.
