Good morning!
It was a perfectly rare and glorious autumn morning with leaves leaving their summer perches, acts of self-sacrifice to enrich the soil for new life come spring. A time for poets, artists, naturalists, and lovers. Some say it’s not picnic weather, but dress properly, choose your wine carefully, and you just might enjoy the best picnic ever. Before it becomes an issue, I pay $11 (plus a generous tip) every six weeks or so to get my hair cut. I consider this a luxury since for the majority of my life I cut my own hair. Only two days left to get your brackets ready… you’re going to want to get in on this: Fat Bear Week
- It’s too late for yesterday, maybe too late for today, but it’s not too late for tomorrow.
Here’s Why You Feel So Tired
- “You often feel tired, not because you’ve done too much, but because you’ve done too little of what sparks a light in you.” (Leadership First)
- Still undecided about climate change? This is NOT a partisan nor a political topic… read ALL of this, please: Climate Change
- (I’ll make these Musings shorter so as to give you time to read that fascinating thome.)
- I took one of those random parlor game 7-question on-line quizzes promising to comprehensively define my personality, values, and aspirations.
- It suggested I should be hosting backyard wine and charcuterie parties featuring individual charcuterie trays for each guest.
COVID-19 Brings Extreme Poverty
- According to the World Bank, national lock-downs due to the COVIDs and the ensuing economic catastrophe will push between 71,000,000 and 100,000,000 people into extreme poverty this year.
- And that was an estimate made before things got worse.
- Extreme poverty includes not having access to things like clean water, electricity, sufficient food, health care, and schools for children.
- Oxford University, a bit bolder, estimates 490,000,000 in 70 countries will be cast into extreme poverty due to the COVIDs. (The Economist)
- From having made some progress out of poverty the previous decade.
Pen and Paper is Still More Helpful for Recall
- Don’t throw away your pen and paper.
- Researchers have found that notes taken by hand result in cognitive engagement; e.g., summarizing, paraphrasing, organizing, conceptualizing, vocabulary mapping, Etc., and as a result leads to deeper understanding.
- By contrast, so-called note taking with an electronic device is more of a parroted rote exercise and doesn’t lead to the personalizing of the information.
- Striking keys (or thumb punching), in other words, does not connect the brain and the affect in the same way your hand connected with a pen does.
- Additionally, Leonardo da Vinci wrote, “… the more minutely you describe, the more you will confuse the mind of the reader and the more you will remove (him) from knowledge of the thing described… therefore, it is necessary to make a drawing… as well as to describe.” (da Vinci)
- Coming next week: Excellent information on listening — that seldom taught essential skill.
- Also premiering next week: A quiz testing your knowledge of history and our republic.
When to Celebrate Halloween in 2020
- When do you begin to celebrate the Feast of All Hallow’s Eve?
- I observed it in our neighborhood as early as mid-September.
A Final Note…
- Without A Vision Consultancy’s uniqueness in the marketplace is the way in which we actively listen.
- We are not trying to sell you anything, we do not have a template or a book we’re promoting; no panacea.
- We listen, we seek to understand, we listen some more — and then we help you to create YOUR vision and YOUR plan — one that won’t sit on the shelf.
- You might not be the right client if you don’t care enough to pause, consider the big picture, and trust a process.
- Once you have a vision all it takes is patience and persistence along parallel paths to achieve success.
- Without a vision the people perish — metaphorically and for real.
