Morning Coffee

August 3,  2026

Good morning! August. Our son will sometimes start his day from Downtown New Jersey with a sweet and satisfying serenade to us about coffee — sung by a lovable brown bear. Little did we know — until now — J. S. Bach wrote and performed a Coffee Cantata (in D-Minor) back in 1732 Germany. I’m listening to it as I type… and as I drink the coffee… it is quite delightful and VERY Bach-esque. Looking for a couch-cuddling tear-jerker of an emotionally raw and dramatic movie, based upon a true story? Look no further than Ordinary Angels on the NetFlexes… a Jack Reacher film.  Pretty good…Ten times more than a decade ago… stuff falling on our heads from outer space, that is… ten times — and you don’t hear about it, but you might feel it sometime soon.

  • China’s global investment market share ranges from one percent in the area of finance to 60% in machinery.
    • China leads all other countries in Electronics, basic manufacturing, chemicals, agriculture, and automotive — as reported by  S&P Global Market Intelligence.
    • The United States leads in pharmaceuticals, professional services, financial services, and information technology.  (Ibid.)
      • (By a wide margin in those last two categories.)
    • Does it matter?
    • Probably not if the world were still flat, but… (Friedman, 2005 — remember?)
    • China and the U.S. don’t lead in every category… the rest of the world is making a relatively larger investment in utilities and retail/ wholesale.  (Ibid.)
  • “Many organizations struggle not because they lack strong talent or advanced artificial intelligence tools…
    • … but because they fail to integrate them into coherent systems.”  (Durth, Etc., et al.)
  • D’uhoh, finally someone is saying (writing) it out loud.
    • Turns out, if your child receives an annual $5,000 gift to add to his/ her $1,000 federal gift at birth, s/he will have $256,000 by the age of 18.
    • If your child receives just the $1,000 gift from Uncle Sam and nothing else, s/he will have $5,560 after the passage of the same amount of time.
    • C’mon… d’uho… what a ridiculous illustration.
    • This illustration assumes a 10% annual compounded return… and where can you sign up for that?!  (McKinsey & Co. — editorializing is YT)
  • Counterintuitive?  The world’s #1 producer (digger/ miner) of geologically-pure natural diamonds is… wait for it… Russia.
    • It might make more sense after you think about how hyuuuge and diverse Russia is geographically.
  • “(Humankind) have been created for the sake of one another.  Either instruct them, therefore, or endure them.”  (Marcus Aurelius)
  • “The business of the seat of government is become a labyrinth.”  (Madison)
  • I was musing about the range and the intensity of human emotion(s).
    • Because I’m no expert on the subject I contacted my local on-staff researcher who arrived at far more categories than I anticipated.
    • I’m not sure I agree with these data, but I’m sharing them with you here, not knowing whom to credit.
    • (Who knew annoyance could be an emotion???  It’s one I experience often.)
    • From my researcher:  “There isn’t a universally agreed-upon list of all human emotions. Psychologists, neuroscientists, and philosophers use different models, and emotions often blend together or vary across cultures. That said, we can organize the known emotional landscape into a comprehensive framework.
