What Most Managers Believe

March 30, 2026

Good morning! Though it has been three weeks, we are still not fully synchronized with Greenwich Mean Time. I think of them as Montpelier Moments. I hope you have them — or have had at least one in your lifetime.

Perfect weather, early morning sunshine, a bit of mist or dew perhaps, crisp sniffs of oxygen, high skies, newly-laundered clothes fitting snugly and sensuously next to freshly-scrubbed skin, healthy human interactions — but not too many, all green lights…

…everything in perfect alignment.

It probably helps if you are attitudinally predisposed to begin with — and many aren’t.

The capital of Vermont is a quintessential, picturesque Rockwellian hamlet —

— and when you add a genuinely friendly but not overbearing early morning 1950s-era street vendor with freshly-fried doughnuts… Arrrrgh!

Deliciously crisp edges, yeasty melt-in-your mouth innards, just a hint of sweetness…

That’s a Montpelier Moment.

  • The health benefits associated with being outdoors — anytime, but especially in spring — are nothing short of astounding.
    • Count the ways:  Intellectual — Emotional — Psychological — Spiritual — Physical — Social… maybe even, Romance…
  • Is the solution to be found in free beer?  Or, cheap beer?  Or, inexpensive beer — relatively speaking?
    • The Minnesota Twins, seeking attendance and raucous behaviour, if not a game-winning roster, will offer $2 beer prior to the start of each game… gotta get there early.
    • No doubt some high-ranking executive somewhere is hoping to attract fans who won’t really care about the game itself.
    • How many can you slug down before the first pitch?  Genius.
    • I suppose you wouldn’t even have to stay for the game.
    • Free beer here!
  • For most of earth’s history, pond scum ruled…
    • … at times you are convinced it still does…
    • … try not to get discouraged by the messes…
    • … evolution favours persistence, not slime.  (Mathis)
  • “We could drive to spring break and spend hundred$ on gas, or fly and never actually get there.”  (Solomon)
  • Is there a terminal velocity to the expansion of sports in the United States?
    • At what point will the economic model be no longer sustainable?
  • Most managers believe their job is to get results through people.
    • And, they’re right.
    • But, there’s a layer most never think about.
    • The real, tangible reason WHY the work matters to the person doing it.
    • Two workers can do the eggxact same job, same tasks, same pay, same hours, and have a completely different experience.
    • The difference isn’t the work — it’s the leader — and the culture created by that leader. (Informed by Eades)
  • The United States is currently home to the world’s most competitive economy.
    • It generates 26% of global GDP and is home to 59 of the world’s top 100 companies.
    • But… some historical advantages; e.g., fiscal health, infrastructure, educational achievement… are now eroding.
    • To safeguard the U.S.’s competitive edge, there are essential prerequisites for future success:
    • Artificial Intelligence-fluent work force
    • Meeting the surging demand for electrical power
    • National economic security (Panas, Etc., et al.)
  • Head scratcher:  It’s no longer enough for brands to market solely to humans…
    • ChatBots and (robotic) shopping assistants are a fast-growing and influential audience…
    • It’s coming:  $350 billion spent (invested?) on the retail transformations last year…  (Ibid.)
